Individual Health Insurance in Lutz

If you buy your own coverage, the plan details decide what you really pay. We lay out deductibles, networks and drug lists from several carriers side by side, explain what each line means, and let you choose without pressure.

Who individual coverage is for

An individual health plan insures one person, who buys it directly instead of through a job. It suits people who are self-employed, between jobs, working part time, retiring early or working for an employer with no plan. It also suits anyone aging off a parent's plan at 26.

In Florida, most individual plans are ACA-compliant. They cannot refuse you or raise your price over a preexisting condition, and they must include the ten essential health benefits, such as hospital care, maternity care, mental health and prescriptions. Where plans differ is cost sharing and network, and those are the spots that surprise people.

Because we are an independent insurance agency, no single carrier employs us. We shop 50+ insurance carriers and compare their plans on the figures you care about.

What we go through with you

  1. 01

    The four cost numbers

Premium, deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum. We show how they work together, because a low premium paired with a high deductible can cost more over a year if you see doctors often.

  2. 02

    Network type and your doctors

HMO, EPO and PPO plans handle specialists and out-of-network care differently. We check whether your current doctors and nearest hospital are in each plan's network before you pick one.

  3. 03

    Drug formulary check

Each carrier sorts medications into tiers, and the tier sets your copay. We look up the medications you take on each plan's list so a regular refill does not become a surprise bill.

  4. 04

    Subsidy eligibility

Premium tax credits are based on your expected yearly income. We walk through the estimate with you and explain what happens at tax time if your income changes.

  5. 05

    Enrollment paperwork

Once you pick a plan, we work through the application with you over the phone. We also double-check the effective date with the carrier, so there is no gap between your old coverage and the new one.

When individual coverage is worth a look

  • You are leaving a job with benefits

When job coverage ends, a special enrollment window opens, usually for 60 days. We weigh an individual plan against COBRA, which continues your old plan but often at its full cost with no help.

  • You turned 26

Coming off a parent's plan counts as a qualifying event. Miss the window and you may go without coverage until the next open enrollment.

  • Your premium jumped at renewal

Each year carriers reset prices and networks. Last year's good fit may no longer be the best deal.

  • Your doctor left the network

Claims suddenly marked out of network mean your plan's provider list has shifted. That is reason enough to compare at open enrollment.

  • You started working for yourself

People who work for themselves often qualify for tax credits and may be able to deduct premiums. We handle the coverage questions and recommend checking the tax questions with your tax preparer.

How a consultation works

  1. 1

    A short call

We start with a few basics: your age, your county and a rough income figure for the year. Then we note which physicians matter to you and any medicines you refill. With that, the plan prices we quote are real ones.

  2. 2

    Side-by-side comparison

We lay out three or four plans from different carriers on the same terms: premium after any credit, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, network and drug tiers. We meet at our office or by phone and video, whichever suits you.

  3. 3

    Plain answers to your questions

We explain why one plan costs less and what you give up for it. You decide; there is no push toward a particular carrier.

  4. 4

    Enrollment and follow-up

We complete the application together on the call, then help you set up the first premium payment. That step matters, because the carrier does not activate coverage until the first payment arrives.

What drives the cost of an individual plan

Your premium is based on a short set of factors the law allows carriers to use. Our consultation is free. The carrier you choose pays us, so our review adds nothing to what you pay.

Age
Prices go up with age on a fixed scale. An older applicant can pay as much as three times what a 21-year-old pays for the identical plan.
Location
Both prices and networks change from county to county. Lutz is close to the Hillsborough-Pasco line, so your plan choices can depend on which side of it you live.
Metal tier
Bronze keeps your monthly charge low but leaves you paying more of each bill before the plan steps in. Gold and platinum reverse that, with a higher monthly charge and less to pay when you get care. Silver can include extra cost-sharing reductions when your income qualifies.
Tobacco use
Florida carriers can charge a tobacco surcharge, so answer that application question truthfully.
Income and tax credits
The income you expect determines whether a tax credit cuts your monthly premium and by how much.

Questions about individual health plans

Can I get an individual plan after open enrollment closes?

Usually not, unless a life change opens a special window. Qualifying changes include losing your coverage, moving, getting married or having a child. Federal marketplace open enrollment runs every fall into mid-January. Outside those periods, most ACA plans will not take new applicants.

What is the difference between my deductible and my out-of-pocket maximum?

You pay covered costs yourself until you reach the deductible, and then the plan begins sharing bills with you through copays or coinsurance. The out-of-pocket maximum is the cap on your share of in-network care for the plan year. When you reach it, the plan pays 100 percent through the end of that year. Premiums do not count toward either amount.

For a single person, which is better: HMO or PPO?

That depends on how you use care. An HMO tends to cost less but needs referrals and in-network doctors. A PPO costs more and lets you see specialists or out-of-network providers, though you pay a larger share.

Does a preexisting condition make my premium higher?

Not with an ACA-compliant plan. Carriers may not refuse you or charge more based on your health history. Your condition still shapes the choice, since it affects which network and drug list will work for you.

Does going through you cost more than going to the carrier?

No. Your premium is identical whether you enroll on your own or with us. The carrier pays our commission, so our comparison adds nothing to what you owe.

Should I put my spouse or children on my plan?

When more people need coverage, our family health insurance page explains how shared plans and family deductibles work. We can also pair dental insurance or vision insurance with an individual plan.
